World Vector
Northly is a character in World Vector, the virtual reality game where most of FEViR takes place.

World Vector's universe is a relatively standard fantasy setting, with magic to learn and slimes to fight. However, it has a few quirks. The devs, in all their wisdom, decided to make a world where magical transformation is normalised. This lets players start as themselves (as is required by the VR technology) but become anything. Flying fish? Go for it. The Queen? Easy.

Though living in a video game world, it is unclear if Northly is truly a character, as she does not display the characteristic "AI vibe" that players expect from NPCs. Further to this, when a major goddess used Northly to communicate with players, this caused Northly to first collapse, then on regaining consciousness, Northly began acting like other NPCs. The point at which I am taking her is the moment of her collapse.

Position
Northly is a priestess of Nateria, a major goddess in the World Vector universe. Nateria holds dominion over Life and Matter, as well as the elements earth and water.

Northly grew up as a priestess candidate, raised by the church with no knowledge of her parents. Life as a priestess candidate required significant study of religious texts, re-interpretation and presentation of the stories there-in, as well as practice in arts relating to Nateria's domains. Northly is skilled in water magic, sign language and absolutely hopeless at pottery, though she has put a lot of effort into it.

To transition from priestess candidate to priestess, priestesses conduct a "dialogue" with their goddess. This dialogue is where a priestess candidate communicates with the goddess, the goddess possesses her, and bestows her blessing on the priestess. Typically, the dialogue to initiate priestesses lasts a few seconds to a minute. In Northly's case, her goddess possessed her for a full day. Northly then fell into a coma for three months. Because of her extended dialogue, it is believed that Northly is immortal, and cannot die without interference from the goddess Nateria.

Due to her role as priestess — and a powerful priestess at that — Northly is often confined within the walls of the church. She accepts her confinement, though she would prefer to be less sheltered, as she is friendly and affable and enjoys connecting with new people.

Status and recent events
As part of living in a game universe, she has access to an RPG style status menu that she can bring up and display at will. However, to those who live in World Vector, walking around with your status visible is rather like walking around with no pants on. That is the main way players (and NPCs) identify whether someone is an NPC or a player. Players show their status, NPCs do not.

In order to gather information, the main characters of FEViR request to see Northly's status, as they suspect she is not an NPC, and she has no knowledge of being a player, dev or mod. When she shows them her status, she discovers it has changed from what it usually shows. She has a blacked out condition, a blacked out word before her name, and her usual "Blessing of matter" condition is replaced with "Bound by the world" which is a direct blessing from the goddess. Direct blessings are both powerful and rare.

One of the stats available in World Vector is "alignment." Someone can either have an alignment of Matter, which indicates devotion to Nateria, or Void, which indicates devotion to the other main goddess in World Vector, with a percentage to indicate the level of devotion.

As Northly shows her status to the main characters, her alignment, which was Matter (101.5%), begins to drop. As it drops, she becomes increasingly distressed, crying and yelling into the air that she is loyal. Her tears rise from her cheeks and hover around her. After she yells "I love you so much!" and her alignment falls to 50%, she collapses. This is the canon point from which I am taking Northly.

Personality answers:
Your character must live with only one sense for a year. They are allowed to choose. What do they pick? Why? How do they cope?
Northly would pick sight, though she would dither between sight and touch. As Nateria is the goddess of matter, and the opposing goddess is the goddess of void as well as sound, those devoted to Nateria learn sign language as a part of their studies. As such, she would be able to communicate with those around her as long as she was able to see them. She considered touch because that is more aligned with matter and thus her goddess, but the convenience of sight outweighed that. With communication largely unhindered, she would make it through the year without much difficulty, though she would miss touch and taste dreadfully.

What is your character most afraid of?
She is most afraid of her own immortality, and the idea that her goddess will not allow her the peace of death when her time to die comes.

What would it take to truly upset your character, enough that they would act upon their feelings? Are they the sort to forgive?

Pressing her overly on the parts of her religion she is not comfortable with would truly upset her. The mythology of her goddess tells of her murdering her sister, and then attempting to take her own life after she is driven mad by grief. However, her sister, acting as the goddess of death, did not allow her to die. Because of this, there are complicated thoughts among the church on life and suicide, and as someone "blessed" with immortality, Northly's thoughts are even more complicated than most. She is very forgiving, and believes that people can grow and change.

What is justice to your character? How important is it to them?
Justice is exceptionally important to Northly. However, she believes in a wide view of it. In essence, she believes that severe punishment — capital punishment, torture, other physical harm — is almost always unjust as it will impact those around the one given punishment. Even smaller punishments — fines, community service — must be determined with a wider perspective than just the one to be punished. Whether that means to take into account the financial situation of the one to be punished's family in determining a fine, or to take into account seasonal work requirements, so that a farmer would not be required to give up their time during harvest time.

While there are those in the church who take every word in their religious texts as entirely true, correct and complete, Northly believes in her own judgement, reason and morals before relying on the words of others — even the words of her goddess. And she believes to do so is to follow the will of her goddess.

Inventory:
  • A wooden staff of light and dark wood carved to look both like a tree and two bodies entwined — though primarily of sentimental value, it is remarkably sturdy if a melee weapon is needed in a pinch. Can be used to channel magic under Nateria's domain, but does not have any magic of its own, it's just wood.
  • Vibrating massager (vibration is powered by magic)
  • A jewellery box containing a toolkit of jewellery enchanted with low-powered cosmetic transformation spells (rings that smooth wrinkles, a hair clip that reinvigorates hair follicles to produce colour, a necklace that heals blemishes)

Powers/Abilities:
  • Water magic (gone on arrival as it is linked to her goddess)
  • Immortality (gone on arrival as it is linked to her goddess)
  • RPG style status menu (presumably not available)
Samples: Here & Here

Goals: I'm excited to explore placing a character from a setting which has normalised transformation, somewhere which will transform her in a very different manner to what she is used to, and play with how she handles being cut off from her goddess.

Soul Choice: Aves (specifically pīwakawaka/fantail)
